Today, Instagram announced a new dynamic profile photo feature that will allow users to display both their profile photo and avatar. Before this change, users were forced to pick between showing their avatar or profile picture. You can switch between the two at will now.
The company, which is owned by Meta, announced the feature in a tweet, “Now you can add your avatar to the other side of your pic — and people visiting your profile can flip between the two.”
Click the “Edit Profile” tab to replace your profile picture with an avatar. When you upload an avatar to your profile, it will replace your profile picture when people view your profile.
As part of this update, your social media avatar will now wave, marking the debut of animated avatars on the platform. Avatars were first introduced to Instagram by Meta almost a year ago, and the company is currently working to make them more visible by integrating them into the app’s dynamic profile photo feature. In an effort to compete with Snap’s Bitmoji, the company introduced avatars in 2020 and has since updated them across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri recently stated that the company plans to put more emphasis on photos in 2023, and this new dynamic profile photo feature is the first step in that direction. Mosseri acknowledged last year that Instagram displayed too many videos and not enough photos in a weekly Q&A with users. To users’ further comfort, he assured them that photos would remain an integral part of the service.
